Sanwo-Olu Hails Senate’s Approval of State Police as Game-Changer for Security

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has welcomed the Senate’s approval of the constitutional amendment to establish state police nationwide. He believes bringing policing closer to communities will strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. Describing the decision as a historic milestone, the governor praised President Bola Tinubu’s long-standing advocacy for a more federal security framework. He recalled that Tinubu first championed state police during his tenure in Lagos between 1999 and 2007 despite facing opposition. Sanwo-Olu urged state assemblies to move quickly and ratify the amendment. He expressed confidence the new structure will improve public safety and ensure law enforcement responds more effectively to local needs.
