Why Are Families Forced to Pay for Autopsies in Nigeria?
I have seen two recent tragic cases where victims’ families were asked to pay for investigations. In Imo State, the father of a student nurse who was raped and murdered said the CID demanded money for an autopsy and other tests. In Delta State, police told another bereaved family to exhume the young girl’s body, pay for autopsy fees, and even fuel the police vehicle. This seems to happen in other states too. How can crime victims—or their families—be charged before government security forces do their work? What happened to the funding meant for police investigations? I can’t understand what is going on in this country.
