EFCC Warns ₦30 Billion Primary Spending Threatens Democracy

EFCC Warns ₦30 Billion Primary Spending Threatens Democracy

The EFCC chairman raised alarm over governorship aspirants spending up to ₦30 billion in recent party primaries. He warned that such extreme costs could push officials to recoup funds through public resources. He said the commercialisation of politics undermines leadership credibility and weakens democratic values. Leaders who buy their way in may prioritise recovering expenses over serving citizens. The anti-graft agency has arrested and prosecuted politicians, electoral officials and others involved in vote-buying. The chairman urged fair and consistent enforcement of electoral laws to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy. Looking to 2027, the EFCC plans to deploy drones and other technologies to monitor polling units. He called on INEC, security agencies, political parties and civil society to focus on issue-based campaigns and transparent elections.
