After Eagles’ Exit, Nigerian Fans to Back Ghana and South Africa at World Cup 2026

After Eagles’ Exit, Nigerian Fans to Back Ghana and South Africa at World Cup 2026

Nigerian football supporters will rally behind African teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Super Eagles failed to qualify. The Nigeria Football Supporters Club has teamed up with groups from Ghana and South Africa to cheer on fellow African sides in North America. Chairman Vincent Okumagba is already in Canada to support Ghana’s group matches against Panama, England and Croatia. He also serves as vice president of the African Football Supporters Association alongside South Africa’s Joy Chauke and Ghana’s Osuman Kassim Awal. The group plans to back Ghana in Canada before travelling to Mexico City on June 11 to cheer on South Africa against Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea. Financial limits may prevent trips to the United States to support teams like Egypt, but the supporters remain committed to backing African sides throughout the tournament.

Uniting behind Ghana and South Africa shows solidarity, yet it highlights how much we miss seeing our own Super Eagles back on the World Cup pitch.

I get the spirit, but cheering for other nations risks diluting the unique intensity of our own fan culture at the World Cup.

Perhaps the Supporters Club can organize watch parties in Nigerian communities to maintain our football spirit while backing other African teams.
