DHQ Explains Silence on Abducted Retired General’s Death in Bandits’ Captivity

DHQ Explains Silence on Abducted Retired General’s Death in Bandits’ Captivity

The Defence Headquarters says it stayed quiet over the abduction of retired Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar to protect ongoing rescue efforts by the Armed Forces and other security agencies. In a statement, the Director of Defence Information confirmed that Abubakar died in captivity from complications of diabetes and hypertension. He and his wife were seized in May while travelling through Katsina State. A video earlier circulated showed the couple appealing for help as their abductors demanded the release of detained bandits and livestock. The military says every available resource was deployed to secure the general’s safe release. The DHQ extends heartfelt condolences to his family and reaffirms its resolve to intensify operations against terrorists and bandits threatening national security. The statement describes Abubakar as a distinguished officer whose service and commitment remain an example for all personnel.

I'm not convinced the silence was justified—it reads more like damage control than a thoughtful military tactic.
