FIGC President Gabriele Gravina Resigns After Third Consecutive World Cup Miss

Gabriele Gravina stepped down as President of the Italian Football Federation after Italy’s play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina ended their hopes of a third successive World Cup. He announced his resignation at an emergency FIGC council meeting attended by presidents of Serie A, B and C, as well as representatives of amateur leagues, players and coaches. Gravina led the federation since October 2018 and oversaw Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph. However, failures to reach the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, combined with the prior 2018 absence, fuelled calls for new leadership. An election to appoint his successor is set for June 22. Sport Minister Andrea Abodi says Italian football must be rebuilt, beginning with a renewal of FIGC leadership.

Do you feel his resignation alone can shift the power balance, or are deeper reforms needed first?

I agree it's a start, but I doubt one resignation alone can uproot those deep, systemic issues in Italian football.

It's telling that Italy missed three World Cups in a row before the president stepped down, yet systemic issues persist.

Resigning feels like an easy out when league reforms or youth investment could deliver more lasting solutions for Italian football.
