China Hands Death Sentence to Ex-Nanjing Official Over $325m Bribes
An eastern Chinese court has sentenced former Nanjing official Yang Youlin to death for accepting over 2.2bn yuan in bribes. He was also found guilty of embezzlement, abuse of power and money laundering over a 30-year career. Prosecutors say Yang used his roles to secure engineering contracts, land transfers and financing in exchange for cash and valuables. His case ranks among the largest corruption convictions under President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign. Despite cooperating with investigators, the court ruled that Yang’s offences caused exceptionally heavy losses and were too grave to receive a suspended sentence. Death penalties for white-collar crimes in China remain rare, typically reserved for cases involving sums above 1bn yuan.
