Africa Pledges Nearly $499M to Strengthen Response to Rare Ebola Outbreak
African governments and international partners have committed almost $498.8 million to contain the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Central and East Africa. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention head announced the funding after a high-level meeting on regional health security. Key donors include the World Bank, the United States, European partners and UN humanitarian funds. Health officials warn that the rare Bundibugyo strain lacks an approved vaccine or targeted treatment. More than 900 suspected cases and over 100 confirmed infections have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while Uganda has recorded seven cases and one death. Experts say rapid response, coordination and public trust remain vital as the World Health Organization classifies the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
