Mbappé Breaks World Cup Scoring Record as France Edge Senegal 3-1
Defending champions France opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Senegal. Senegal dominated the first half and created the better chances but failed to score. France controlled possession but only tested the goalkeeper once before the break. In the second half Michael Olise set up Kylian Mbappé in the 66th minute to break the deadlock. Substitute Bradley Barcola added a second in the 82nd with a precise chip over Édouard Mendy. Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back in the 94th minute with a stunning long-range strike. Seconds later Mbappé fired a 30-yard blast into the top corner. His 14th World Cup goal moved him past Lionel Messi on the all-time list and made him France’s top scorer in tournament history.
