Why We Should Blame America, Not Iran, for Terrorism in Nigeria

I argue that Iran has no role in fueling terrorism in Nigeria. Boko Haram and ISWAP are offshoots of ISIL and al-Qaeda—groups that Iran actively opposes. After the US invasion of Libya, weapons flooded the Sahel and reached Western-backed militants like Boko Haram. This destabilisation benefits those who wish to install friendly regimes in resource-rich regions. If Nigeria truly wants to end terrorism, it must focus on the actors who have destabilised our region. Iran’s forces have helped defeat ISIS in Syria and Turkey. Persisting in false accusations against Iran reflects ignorance or fanaticism—our energy should be spent holding the right parties accountable.
