FG Wins Convictions for 386 Terrorism Suspects in Landmark Abuja Mass Trial

FG Wins Convictions for 386 Terrorism Suspects in Landmark Abuja Mass Trial

Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, announced that the Federal Government secured convictions against 386 of the 508 defendants tried in a special mass terrorism trial in Abuja. Two suspects were acquitted and eight were discharged. The convicted individuals received prison terms ranging from eight years to life, reflecting the severity of their offenses. The remaining 112 suspects will appear in court during the next phase of the trial scheduled for June 15 to 18. Fagbemi noted that the use of ten judges who sat through the Easter holiday as special trial panels underscores the government’s resolve to curb terrorism. International observers, including Amnesty International and representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association and the National Human Rights Commission, monitored the proceedings to ensure transparency and due process. This phase is part of the ninth series of mass prosecutions aimed at dismantling insurgent networks and restoring national security. The Federal Government maintains that such legal actions are key to weakening terrorist operations and safeguarding stability.
