INEC Strengthens Electronic Transmission After 2023 Glitches, Pledges Credible 2027 Polls

INEC national commissioner Abdullahi Zuru spoke at a policy roundtable in Abuja organised by Yiaga Africa. He said the commission reviewed the technical faults that hampered the 2023 elections and has upgraded its electronic transmission systems ahead of 2027. Zuru explained that the INEC results viewing portal was deployed nationwide for the first time at the presidential election. He acknowledged the upload delays and said recent off-cycle polls and governorship elections have run more smoothly under the improved system. Yiaga Africa flagged legal and operational gaps in the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines. It recommended clear transmission protocols, wider portal coverage for collation results, an authoritative Form EC8A and nationwide mock exercises. INEC says every valid vote will count in a free, fair and transparent 2027 election.

Upgrading transmission systems is a necessary step, but without published stress test results, many will still worry about hidden faults.

It's easy to hype new technology, yet past promises fell short when real-time failures happened under pressure.

Local observers need to dey monitor INEC's tests closely and request detailed performance reports before the 2027 polls.
