From Mentor to Misconduct: How Abusing Power Destroys Academic Careers
Several lecturers and professors have lost their jobs after investigations revealed sexual misconduct with students. Decades of academic work can vanish overnight when professional boundaries are ignored. Attraction itself isn’t the issue; the problem starts when power imbalances lead to coercion and intimidation. Many students face threats of carryovers, delayed results or failed projects if they reject advances. This behaviour destroys trust in institutions and taints the reputation of dedicated academics. One bad decision can end a thirty-year career. Should Nigerian universities impose tougher sanctions on lecturers found guilty of abusing their positions to protect students and uphold academic integrity?
