NCC Urges Faster Fibre Rollout, Highlights Broadband’s Role in $1 Trillion Economy Goal

NCC Urges Faster Fibre Rollout, Highlights Broadband’s Role in $1 Trillion Economy Goal

The Nigerian Communications Commission is calling for accelerated fibre-to-the-home deployment. It says expanding broadband is vital to achieving the nation’s $1 trillion economy ambition. Dr Aminu Maida made the appeal at ATCON’s Critical Conversation Forum in Lagos. He noted that internet subscriptions reached 154.7 million in April 2026 and broadband penetration rose from 48.8 percent to 55.7 percent year on year. He identified right-of-way delays, multiple permits, vandalism and weak standards as major barriers. Thirteen states have waived right-of-way fees and 16 adopted the recommended rate of ₦145 per metre. The NCC has launched an Ease of Doing Business Portal and is reviewing the wholesale broadband market to boost competition. It urged governments, security agencies and communities to treat fibre infrastructure as critical national assets.
