Peter Obi Calls for Urgent Overhaul of Nigeria’s Education Funding
Yesterday at Coal City University Enugu I delivered a lecture on repositioning Nigeria’s education sector for national growth and global competitiveness. I commended the Vice-Chancellor and university management for their commitment to academic excellence and providing a platform for meaningful discourse. No nation rises above the quality of its education system. Nigeria’s low Human Development Index and high youth unemployment reflect chronic underinvestment in education and human capital. We allocate less than 10% of our budget to education, well below the global benchmark of 15–20%. I compared our situation to countries like Indonesia, Egypt and South Africa, which enjoy higher HDI scores, longer life expectancy and greater per-capita incomes thanks to sustained investment in human capital. I called for a complete review of Nigeria’s education funding model, stronger public-private partnerships and inclusive policies that recognise the role of both public and private institutions. Education is not charity—it is the foundation of national growth and the gateway to global competitiveness. With deliberate investment and consistent policy, a new Nigeria is not only possible, it is inevitable.
