VP Shettima Reveals Warning That Tinubu’s Traditional Attire Was a Deadly “Charm”
At the launch of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography My Life of Duty and Allegiance, Vice President Kashim Shettima recounted a bizarre warning given to President Tinubu just three months into the administration. Shettima said some people from his home state told Tinubu to stop wearing the Borno attire he had gifted him, claiming the clothes were used to “charm” him and would lead to his death. The President dismissed the plot by wearing the garments publicly for a full week to prove the rumours “did not add up.” The Vice President used the incident to highlight growing suspicion in public life, contrasting it with Gowon’s trust in goodwill—like receiving gallons of fura weekly from the Sultan of Sokoto without question. Shettima closed by urging Nigerians to reject divisive forces and quoted Martin Luther King Jr.: “Let us learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” The event drew former President Goodluck Jonathan, the Sultan of Sokoto, and other dignitaries.
