US Men’s $16M World Cup Prize to Boost Women’s Team Under Equal Pay Deal

US Men’s $16M World Cup Prize to Boost Women’s Team Under Equal Pay Deal — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Under U.S. Soccer’s landmark equal pay agreements, the $16 million FIFA prize the men’s national team earned for reaching the last 16 will be pooled and split evenly between both player pools after U.S. Soccer takes its 20% share. Each 26-player roster stands to receive about $246,153. Since the USWNT has not yet qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, their portion will be held in an interest-bearing account until the tournament, with interest also shared equally. This prize-pool structure stems from the women’s team’s 2019 discrimination lawsuit and the 2022 settlement, aiming to close the payout gap between men’s and women’s World Cups.

Pooling the men's $16M prize to ensure equal distribution does showcase commitment, yet the federation's 20% cut could soften the impact on individual payouts.

It's nice on paper, but performance incentives seem overlooked. Women's roster might feel less motivated if rewards don't reflect match results separately.

Clubs and schools could boost youth girls' programs to complement this equal pay move, ensuring more talent reaches national pool and boosts visibility.
