Rotimi Salami Mourns Allwell Ademola as ‘Kilanko’ Earns Best Female Filmmaker Nod in Toronto

Rotimi Salami Mourns Allwell Ademola as ‘Kilanko’ Earns Best Female Filmmaker Nod in Toronto

Nollywood star Rotimi Salami has shared bittersweet emotions after the late Allwell Ademola’s film “Kilanko (The Invincible Child)” received a nomination for Best Film by a Female Filmmaker at a Toronto festival. Salami celebrated the recognition but admitted he felt heartbroken to represent them alone. He recalled how he and Allwell had spent each New Year’s Eve together for five consecutive years and how her sudden passing from a heart attack left him overwhelmed with grief. Still grieving, Salami thanked colleagues and fans for their support, responded to critics who accused him of using her memory to promote the film, and honoured Allwell with a heartfelt tribute on Mother’s Day.

I'm not sure a single nomination can fully honor Allwell Ademola's legacy, even if Kilanko does look promising.

Maybe we're focusing too much on awards rather than celebrating the actual storytelling behind Kilanko and Ademola's work.

Organizers could consider a dedicated tribute screening for Allwell Ademola's films to match the recognition at Toronto festival.
