Police Deny IGP Issued Shoot-on-Sight Order in Benue

The Nigeria Police Force says Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu did not issue a shoot-on-sight directive during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State. The Force said the IGP was referring to Force Order 237, which sets out the legal and operational conditions for officers’ use of firearms. It said officers have been briefed on when firearms may be used under the Rules of Engagement. Police said the remarks stressed professionalism and compliance with existing guidelines, not indiscriminate force. It urged the public and media to disregard reports claiming that the IGP ordered officers to shoot suspects on sight.
