EU MPs Demand Investigation of Infantino Over Balogun Ban Reprieve

Over 70 members of the European Parliament have urged FIFA to launch a formal inquiry into President Gianni Infantino after Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension was unexpectedly lifted ahead of the USA’s round of 16 exit, according to talkSPORT. Balogun had received a straight red card in the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, only to have his one-match ban suspended for 12 months following a personal call from US President Donald Trump to Infantino. Infantino maintains that FIFA’s judicial bodies operate independently under the Disciplinary Code and that his conversation with President Trump did not sway the process. EU lawmakers now want assurances that no political interference influenced the decision.
