Electoral Act 2026 Threatens to Legalize Certificate Forgery

Electoral Act 2026 Threatens to Legalize Certificate Forgery — 1 of 2
1 / 2

We write with a heavy heart to alert the global legal community to a dangerous assault on Nigeria’s electoral integrity. Section 137(1)(j) of the Constitution bars anyone who presents a forged certificate from running for president. Yet new clauses in the Electoral Act 2026 limit certificate verification and locus standi, effectively shielding forgers from accountability. This move undermines merit and invites fraud. It tells students and professionals that hard-earned degrees lose value next to a forged document protected by political patronage. We urge legal bodies to condemn these provisions, support upcoming constitutional challenges, and hold accountable those who subvert the Constitution for the benefit of a corrupt few.

How do you think the new Electoral Act clause will impact public trust if it effectively removes penalties for submitting forged certificates?

True, ditching penalties will definitely erode trust even more. People won't buy these reforms.

It looks like the new clause sidesteps the constitution's ban, e fit weaken voter trust in candidates' credentials.

Honestly, I'm not convinced this clause will automatically legalize forgery; lawmakers often include broad language that rarely gets enforced.

We need clear guidelines on verifying candidate documents before elections to prevent any loophole that might allow forged certificates to slip through.
