Ojoto Indigenes Protest Festival Date Changes, Appeal to Gov. Soludo

Ojoto Indigenes Protest Festival Date Changes, Appeal to Gov. Soludo — 1 of 4

Members of Otu Omenala Ojoto staged a peaceful protest at the Light House in Awka on June 19, urging the Anambra State Government to reverse what they call arbitrary shifts in their traditional festival dates. Led by Chief Anthony Uzokwe, protesters held placards defending the fixed seasons of the Ifejioku and Egwueke festivals. They allege the local traditional ruler changed the dates without proper consultation, creating tension between indigenes at home and in the diaspora. Anambra State’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, received the group’s petition and assured them that Igwe Gerald Mbamalu will be invited for talks. He pledged to review their concerns and preserve Ojoto’s heritage.
