Sharia Council Demands Urgent Federal Response to Surge in Killings and Kidnappings
The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has warned that the security situation is worsening across the country. It highlights a rise in killings, kidnappings, terrorism and banditry despite government assurances. Recent attacks in Borno, Oyo, Niger and Zamfara States underline the vulnerability of many communities. The Council also cited the abduction of a retired Army general and his wife in Katsina. Many rural incidents go unreported, suggesting the actual toll may be far higher. Reports indicate over 1,000 kidnappings in northern Nigeria during the first quarter, with thousands more killed or displaced. The Council urged the Federal Government to deliver concrete action and measurable results. It called for stronger leadership, greater transparency in security funding, modern technology, improved intelligence, inter-agency cooperation and deeper community involvement.
