Iran Reopens Crucial Strait of Hormuz for Oil Tankers as Truce Takes Effect

Iran Reopens Crucial Strait of Hormuz for Oil Tankers as Truce Takes Effect

Iran’s foreign minister has declared the Strait of Hormuz open to all commercial vessels for as long as the current ceasefire holds. This strategic waterway handles about a third of global oil shipments. It remains unclear whether the announcement applies to the new 10-day truce between Lebanon and Israel or the earlier two-week agreement with the United States. Iran had insisted on extending the Lebanon ceasefire before reopening the route. A senior Revolutionary Guard official said only civilian ships may use designated channels with prior permission from the IRGC navy. All military vessels are still barred from transit. Following the announcement, oil prices plunged from recent highs. The United States praised the move but said its naval blockade on Iranian ports will stay in place until a comprehensive peace deal is finalised.

It's striking that Iran only committed to reopening the strait for as long as the ceasefire, suggesting commercial flow still hinges on fragile diplomacy.

Shipping firms should consider diversifying routes and purchasing short-term war risk insurance to safeguard operations during this uncertain 10-day window.
