Yoruba Kings Invoke Ancestral Powers to Tackle Banditry and Kidnapping
Traditional rulers across Yorubaland are set to invoke ancestral deities and deploy indigenous spiritual measures alongside security forces to curb banditry, kidnapping and violent crime. This move follows a call by the Ooni of Ife during the grand finale of the Ifa Festival. Monarchs such as the Olowu of Owu-Kuta and the Olowo of Owo say they believe in the potency of these ancient powers. Some communities have already begun ceremonies, while others are proceeding cautiously to protect local trade. Ifa priests are urging South-West governors to allocate part of their security votes to traditional interventions. They argue that consulting the oracle can reveal impending threats and guide preventive rituals. The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland calls for a united spiritual and physical response. He stresses that Christians, Muslims and traditional worshippers must work together to restore peace in the region.
