I Fought Abacha’s Junta—Why Tinubu Deserves Better Comparisons
This photo was taken in 1998 when I was honoured by the Dutch ambassador for my role in ending the Abacha military regime. I risked my life to restore democracy. I will not let unfair comparisons go unchallenged. Commentators like Farooq Kperogi and Dele Momodu claim the judiciary is “susceptible to political manipulation,” but they offer no data or examples. Such statements erode public trust and could hurt Nigeria’s drive for foreign investment. They also argue President Tinubu is systematically weakening opposition parties. The real issue lies with certain politicians, notably Peter Obi, whose repeated moves through APGA, PDP, Labour Party, and ADC left each organisation divided and dysfunctional. Party splits around elections are nothing new in Nigeria. We must learn from history and focus on evidence, not on sweeping claims that distract from our shared goal of a stronger democracy.
