Mass Defections Propel ADC to Main Opposition in Senate, Shaping 2027 Contest
Nine senators recently left their parties to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), elevating it to the status of main opposition in the Senate. The APC now controls 87 seats, the ADC holds nine, the PDP has six, and smaller parties share the rest. Fresh polls will fill vacancies in Nasarawa North, Enugu North, and Rivers South East. In the House of Representatives, 12 members also switched allegiances, boosting the ADC from one to seven seats. The APC’s tally stands at about 268, while the PDP has dropped to 49. The Labour Party and NNPP each retain 14 seats. Analysts warn the ADC faces organisational hurdles and internal disputes. A PDP official downplayed the ADC’s structure, while a coalition spokesperson said ADC could supplant PDP as the leading opposition if it maintains unity.
