Should Traditional Rulers Serve as Mayors in Nigeria’s Local Councils?
In metropolitan areas, obas could act like ceremonial mayors. They would attend council meetings, advise on policies and watch over funds, while elected chairmen handle execution. In rural councils without a Class A monarch, the baale could preside over deliberations without executive authority. This setup aims to protect local government funds from being diverted by state executives. By placing LG funds directly under the monarch’s oversight, governors would need the traditional ruler’s approval before reallocating resources. This could spur development and improve security in neglected areas. A further proposal is to require a two-thirds majority in the state assembly before a governor can remove an oba. What do you think of these ideas?
