Peter Obi Denies Avoiding Atiku, Says ‘I’ve Never Run From Anybody’

At a pan-African governance forum in Cape Town on May 22, Peter Obi dismissed claims that he is avoiding former vice-president Atiku Abubakar. Describing Atiku as a respected leader and “elder brother,” Obi insisted he has “never run from anybody.” He said their political differences reflect different approaches, not avoidance. The remarks follow the collapse of their coalition under the African Democratic Congress earlier this year. After leaving ADC with Rabiu Kwankwaso, Obi joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress and called for an end to litigation-driven politics.

Do you think Obi's denial of avoiding Atiku signals genuine respect or is it more of a political tactic now?

I agree, it does feel like genuine respect, though a savvy politician always keeps one eye on strategy.

It's interesting that Obi explicitly calls Atiku an elder brother while also denying any avoidance claims in Cape Town.

I see your point, but calling him elder brother doesn't always mean there was avoidance. They might just be keeping respect.

I'm not convinced this changes much—publicly denying avoidance doesn't necessarily prove there's no tension behind the scenes.

If both leaders aim to collaborate, they should focus on joint policy workshops and public dialogues to demonstrate genuine unity.
