N4.8bn for HIV Treatment Packs: Why Isn’t It Reaching Nigeria’s 2M Patients?
In February 2025, the Federal Executive Council approved N4.8 billion for HIV treatment packs. According to UNAIDS, that sum covers only 150,000 packs, yet over two million Nigerians live with HIV. Health experts and civil society groups immediately warned the allocation was grossly inadequate. Since the PEPFAR funding freeze, nearly half of Nigeria’s HIV programme staff have lost their jobs. Community support services like nutrition assistance, transport stipends and outreach have largely collapsed. Announcements don’t save lives—ARVs do. Where did this money go?
