Borno State Confirms ₦4bn Rail Project Entry in 2025 Budget Was an Error

The Borno State Government has acknowledged that listing a ₦4 billion rail project in its 2025 Budget Implementation Report was an administrative mistake. The entry claimed ₦2 billion was spent in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and another ₦2 billion in Jere Local Government Area, with both projects marked as fully completed. A civic accountability organisation’s field visits in May 2026 found no evidence of recent rail works, no active sites and no project signage. The group noted only old and deteriorating infrastructure at the Maiduguri Railway Terminus and surrounding corridors. In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security said an internal review showed no rail project was awarded, funded or executed during the 2025 fiscal year. The government is correcting its records and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, due process and accountability.
