ACPN Urges FG to Ban Nicotine and Enforce Tougher Tobacco Controls Amid 28,000 Annual Deaths

ACPN Urges FG to Ban Nicotine and Enforce Tougher Tobacco Controls Amid 28,000 Annual Deaths — 1 of 4

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has appealed to President Tinubu’s administration to adopt stronger measures against tobacco use. In a statement marking World No Tobacco Day, the ACPN chair warned that tobacco-related illnesses now claim up to 28,000 lives in Nigeria each year and impose a ₦634 billion burden on the health sector and economy. He highlighted how tobacco companies target young people with flavored products, deceptive packaging and aggressive marketing. The ACPN stressed that e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery systems merely sustain addiction and lure new users into lifelong dependence. Under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” the pharmacists called for bold policies such as eliminating nicotine from tobacco products or an outright ban. They urged the government to tighten enforcement of existing laws and introduce far-reaching regulations to protect future generations from preventable diseases.

Do you think a complete nicotine ban would actually reduce those 28,000 tobacco-related deaths per year in Nigeria?

On what basis do we expect a full nicotine ban will tackle those deaths, instead of shifting users to black market sources?

The ACPN's call sounds urgent, but I wonder how realistic tougher regulations can be without stronger enforcement capacity.

Pushing for a nicotine ban risks driving cigarettes underground where unregulated products could cause even more harm.

A phased approach might work better: start with tougher controls and enforcement before moving to a full nicotine ban nationwide.
