IGP Disu Disbands All Tactical Police Units, Announces Major Restructuring
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has ordered the immediate dissolution of every tactical squad across all commands nationwide. An internal wireless message obtained by a news outlet confirms that units such as the Rapid Response Squad, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping and Scorpion teams must cease operations at once. Under the new arrangement, only area command and divisional surveillance teams may function temporarily. Officers from the disbanded squads will be redeployed to patrol, guard, Divisional Crime Branch, Juvenile and Women Centre, and general beat duties pending further directives. Further details of the restructuring will be unveiled at an end-of-month officers’ conference on March 26, 2026. The move follows public concerns over alleged human rights abuses and extortion by certain tactical units. Separately, the IGP has mandated a resit promotion exercise for senior officers reportedly overlooked in earlier cycles amid bribery allegations. A high-security detail will ensure the integrity of the process.
