Teacher’s Banditry Drill Sparks Panic at Lagos School

A prank during National Awareness Day at Ijaiye Ojokoro Junior College sparked chaos on Wednesday morning. A teacher dressed as a bandit to demonstrate what these criminals look like. When he stepped out of his vehicle, students and some staff fled in fear, believing it was a real attack. Panic quickly spread to three neighbouring schools in the same complex, sending pupils and teachers running across the assembly ground and adjoining streets. Alarmed parents rushed in to collect their children, convinced an actual kidnapping was under way. According to local reports, the drill was part of the weekly banditry awareness programme observed in Lagos State schools.

It's alarming that both students and staff fled before realising it was a drill; seems the exercise lacked basic coordination.

While the intention was to educate, staging a fake armed attack crosses a line—students shouldn't be traumatised for a lesson.

Schools planning similar exercises should first inform all staff and ensure clear signals for drills to prevent needless panic and potential injury.
