Soludo’s Order Defied as Onitsha Markets and Banks Barely Open Amid Sit-at-Home

On Monday, major markets, banks and businesses in Onitsha largely ignored Governor Soludo’s warning against sit-at-home orders, with only about 30 percent of shops open. The state government had threatened to seal non-compliant shops and fine defaulters. Investigations revealed that some owners sent neighbouring traders to operate their shops to avoid sanctions. Meanwhile, traders in Building Materials International Market, Ogidi, and Ogbaru Main Market report over 98 percent compliance, though customer turnout remains low. Traders blame security fears and scarcity of transport for weak patronage. They now depend on the Anambra State Vigilante Group for protection. Market leaders enforce opening through sealing defaulters’ shops and sanctions, hoping improved security will restore normal Monday trade.
