Sokoto Youth, Opposition Parties March to INEC, Demand Removal of Amupitan
A coalition of youth groups, opposition party members, transport workers and women in Sokoto staged a peaceful march to the Independent National Electoral Commission office on Wednesday. Led by Yusuf Abubakar, they carried placards and chanted slogans calling on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to protect Nigeria’s democracy. The protesters demanded the immediate removal or voluntary resignation of INEC chairman Joash Amupitan. They accused his leadership of threatening the integrity of the 27-year democratic process after INEC removed the African Democratic Congress leadership from its portal. As the 2027 elections approach, the group called for transparent and fair electoral practices. They urged the federal government to intervene and safeguard democratic rights. An INEC official received the petition on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and assured the demonstrators their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
