Unsung Guardians: How Nigeria’s Intelligence Services Secure the Nation

Unsung Guardians: How Nigeria’s Intelligence Services Secure the Nation

When we talk about national security, we picture soldiers on the front lines. We rarely pause to acknowledge the intelligence work behind each victory. Recent operations show why that must change. Nigerian agencies helped plan the mission that eliminated the world’s number two ISIS commander. The Department of State Services also arrested suspects linked to the Papiri school attack and disrupted logistics networks funding terror. Too often on social media we amplify images of violence while ignoring breakthroughs. Terrorists thrive on fear. Celebrating intelligence successes boosts morale and denies them their propaganda. Nigeria needs stronger community policing and faster, intelligence-driven trials. We must honour those who work in the shadows—agents who risk life and limb so millions can sleep safely each night.

To boost appreciation, security agencies could share more unclassified briefings or public debriefs that highlight intelligence units' contributions.
