Rivers Stakeholders Unite on World Drug Day as NDLEA Secures 61 Convictions — 1 of 3

On June 26, Rivers State PCRC marked World Drug Day with a call for unified action against substance abuse. They joined NDLEA, the state Ministry of Health, security agencies, educational institutions and community leaders in a roadwalk from Ikoku Junction to Rivers State University. At a campus symposium, PCRC Chairman Dr. Voke Emore stressed that drug abuse drives crime and insecurity. He highlighted this year’s theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” and urged families, schools and residents to support prevention efforts. NDLEA Commander Offor Kenneth Onyeso reported that 242 suspects were arrested and 146kg of illicit drugs seized in the first half of 2026. He added that 61 offenders were convicted and over 70 sensitisation programmes held across the state. The state government announced two new rehabilitation centres and a Medication-Assisted Therapy facility at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Rumuigbo. More than 100 healthcare workers have been trained in prevention and treatment, backed by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Uniting stakeholders is a good start, but focusing on convictions without preventive education might miss addressing root causes of substance abuse.
