Nigeria Then and Now: Where Did Our Peaceful Past Go?
Every day in Nigeria seems more complex and troubled. I often think back to the 80s and 90s with deep nostalgia. Those military years felt surprisingly calm and socially balanced. Back then, you could travel from Warri to Kaduna without knowing anyone and still find a place to sleep. Night journeys were common. Today, moving between states can feel like a life-or-death gamble. Our social life and education priorities have shifted. University admission used to be the pinnacle of success. Now some teenagers flaunt luxury cars with no clear income source. We hear of kidnappings and grisly crimes all too often. Our challenges cut across religion, ethnicity and generations. If older people ignore youth concerns, and young people lack direction, what will become of the next generation?
