Why Nigerian Cement Sells for ₦15,000 a Bag While Neighbours Pay Half
Building costs have shot up. In Nigeria, a 50 kg bag of cement now goes for around ₦15,000 – nearly double Africa’s average price of about $6 per bag. A comparison across 20 African countries shows only Nigeria verified at $10.5–10.8 per bag. Other markets range from $4.5 to $10 per bag, based on industry estimates and regional media reports. High energy costs, clinker imports, landlocked transport fees and concentrated production explain the wide gaps. Despite a domestic glut, major players in Nigeria hold strong pricing power. More competition and improved distribution could bring prices closer to the continental norm. If you’ve seen different factory-to-retail costs or pay more or less in your state, share your data and insights.
