NDLEA Busts Cocaine Ring Hidden in Palm Kernel Oil Tins, Arrests Lagos Kingpin

NDLEA Busts Cocaine Ring Hidden in Palm Kernel Oil Tins, Arrests Lagos Kingpin — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency dismantled a major trafficking ring after a three-week intelligence-led operation. They intercepted 3.10 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside tins of palm kernel extract at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport export shed in Lagos. Two suspects handling the shipment were arrested on March 11. A follow-up sting on April 2 led to the capture of the sender, who was using a fake identity. This breakthrough provided the link to the syndicate’s leader, 52-year-old Arinze, who was tracked down in an Isolo hideout. At the kingpin’s warehouse, officers recovered 886 tins prepared for concealment, a sealing machine, tin openers, paint sprays, and 52 grams of cannabis. According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Arinze confessed to draining oil from the tins to conceal the cocaine.

You're right, using palm oil tins shows how clever traffickers can be. Better X-ray machines and bag profiling would help catch them.

I'm curious—which part of airport screening do you feel overlooked these oil tins with hidden cocaine?

It seems surprising they intercepted only 3.10 kilograms of cocaine after three weeks of intelligence operations at the airport export area.

I'm not convinced tougher checks alone will stop drug rings; traffickers always find new smuggling methods to exploit loopholes.

Customs agencies should adopt random scanning technology and regular staff training to detect concealed substances more effectively during cargo inspections.
