Rushed 12-Year Education Reform Ignores Nigeria’s Real Challenges
I’m concerned the Federal Government replaced the 6-3-3-4 system with a straight 12-year plan without consulting parents, teachers, students or other key stakeholders. Ministers argue this will reduce dropouts, ease subject overload and match “global best practices,” yet offer no plan to build more schools or remove financial barriers guaranteed by our constitution. Jargon about UNESCO’s four pillars rings hollow when we lack basic infrastructure and teacher training. Our 6-3-3-4 model already mirrors systems in China, the US and the UK. The real failure is chronic underinvestment and a lack of political will. Fundamental education reforms deserve open debate and broad consultations before any change takes effect.
