Nigerians Stage Protest at South African High Commission in Abuja Over Violence Abroad
A small group of about a dozen Nigerians gathered peacefully outside the South African High Commission in Abuja. They wanted to hand over a notice demanding protection for Nigerians facing attacks in South Africa. Security officers and police barricaded the building, and the High Commissioner declined to meet the protesters, saying she was afraid. “I didn’t know these people are cowards like this,” one protester remarked. The demonstration follows warnings from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission about rising hostility toward Nigerians and other black immigrants in South Africa. The commission has condemned collective punishment and urged that any crime be treated as an individual offence under South African law.
