Dangote Denies Rift with Elumelu as Sister Appeals for Arrested JAMB Student

Dangote Denies Rift with Elumelu as Sister Appeals for Arrested JAMB Student

Several young people were detained after sharing a false online claim that Aliko Dangote had fallen out with Tony Elumelu. One suspect’s sister says he’s just 18, recently sat for JAMB, and had already apologised for his post before his arrest. In a statement, the Dangote Group dismissed the alleged rift as “entirely baseless” and rejected rumours that its president sought personal loans from business associates to finance the refinery project. The company emphasised that its projects are not funded through informal borrowing. The group also warned against the unauthorised use of Aliko Dangote’s name, likeness, and image in digitally manipulated content. It said such misuse poses reputational risks and could lead to legal action.

Absolutely. It highlights the need for clear guidelines balancing individuals' right to speak with safeguards against harmful false claims that can land someone in serious trouble.

It's striking how authorities moved so quickly despite the student's apology, prompting concerns about due process and proportionality in these cases.

I sympathize with the family's distress, but downplaying fake news consequences could make everyone more vulnerable to rumor damage.

Media platforms and youth organisations should implement clear guidelines and digital literacy campaigns to prevent similar misunderstandings and arrests.
