Sheikh Gumi Questions Nigeria’s Response to UNIJOS Student’s Abduction

Prominent cleric Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Gumi has condemned the violence behind the recent video showing John Arum, a University of Jos student, held captive by kidnappers in Zamfara State. Speaking on social media, he asked how the nation can rescue such victims when perpetrators seem to have lost all humanity. He argued that violence only deepens their resolve and warned against abuses, conspiracy theories or sentimental judgments. Gumi highlighted experts’ view that military action constitutes just 25% of the solution, while non-kinetic measures make up the rest. He urged swift state response and prayed that those responsible or complacent in this crisis face divine justice. Arum and six others were abducted along the Jos–Kaduna highway. A ransom demand initially set at ₦30 million has reportedly been reduced to ₦4 million.

I'm not convinced talk of more measures helps unless we tackle the corruption that stalls any rescue plan.

It's telling that despite Sheikh Gumi's high profile condemnation, our rescue missions still seem slow and chronically under-resourced.

I no sure say adding more security men alone go fix this; we must tackle poverty and impunity first.

Setting up local security committees and dedicated rapid response teams could speed up rescues and deter future kidnappings.
