Ibadan Churchyard Reveals Hidden World War II Soldier Graves
A quiet churchyard in Ibadan hides the graves of two young World War II pilots. Educationist Gbénró Adégbolá discovered the Commonwealth headstones while visiting his mother-in-law’s plot. He learned that Lieutenants Pieter De J. Fritz and B. R. Dimmock crashed nearby in a tropical storm on May 7, 1941, and were buried by faith in Anglican and Catholic cemeteries. Volunteers recently restored one fallen headstone in granite to keep its inscription legible for decades. Adégbolá says this modest site shows how global history can surface in the most ordinary places. For him, seeing these wartime graves beside local family plots makes World War II feel unexpectedly close.
