Kanayo O. Kanayo Demands Lifetime Streaming Royalties for Nollywood Stars
Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has urged the Actors Guild of Nigeria to introduce lifetime royalty payments for every performer featured on streaming platforms. He also called for a dedicated body to enforce the scheme nationwide. Kanayo argues that while Nollywood films now reach global audiences, actors still receive only one-off fees. He cited stories of veterans like Abiodun Ayoyinka and Hanks Anuku, who have faced financial hardship after decades of work. The proposal prompted mixed reactions. Writer-director Jadesola Osiberu joked that actors should help cover producers’ losses, while Bolaji Ogunmola said performers should invest upfront if they want backend earnings. Critics note that Nollywood lacks the legal and union structures needed to manage residuals. AGN President Emeka Rollas admits residuals are absent and says real change requires a complete overhaul of contracts and distribution.
