June 12 Democracy Day: Have Our Heroes’ Sacrifices Been in Vain?
Since 2019, June 12 has been our official Democracy Day in honour of those who fought for Chief MKO Abiola’s annulled victory in 1993. Yet today’s struggles—from corruption and unemployment to electoral fraud and rising insecurity—have many Nigerians questioning the value of our democratic system. Before it became a holiday, June 12 was a rallying point for activists and concerned citizens to diagnose Nigeria’s problems and propose solutions. But decades of unresolved crises—kidnappings, banditry, injustice and regional divides—have fuelled calls for a return to military rule as some believe force alone can end looting and violence. True progress requires peace, unity and a constitution that works for all regions. If we fail to address deep ideological and legal divides across our geopolitical zones, the sacrifices of our heroes may indeed be in vain. Now is the time to renew our commitment to genuine democracy and national cohesion.
