Lagos Police Detain 26 Foreign Nationals over Bogus Kidnap Report

Lagos Police Detain 26 Foreign Nationals over Bogus Kidnap Report

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 26 foreign nationals after uncovering a false kidnapping claim. The group includes 19 Chadians and seven Cameroonians. A 22-year-old Cameroonian woman reported she was abducted after flying in to meet an online acquaintance from Chad. Investigators later discovered she fabricated the story upon learning he was married. The case began on June 16 when Ijede Division officers launched a rescue operation. They traced the apartment where the woman claimed she was held and found 26 individuals aged 19 to 50, including four women. None could produce valid travel documents, and some are suspected of entering through irregular routes. Authorities have transferred the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba. The Diplomatic and Foreigners Desk is profiling the suspects and conducting immigration checks. Further action will depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

I hear you—jet lag, culture shock, or fear of scams could easily spin into a bogus kidnapping claim.

It's notable that 26 foreign nationals, mostly Chadians and Cameroonians, were detained for one misleading report. Seems wider coordination was suspected.

Before meeting strangers abroad, share travel plans with someone trustworthy and double-check any rendezvous details received online.
