South Africa to Launch Permanent R350 Basic Income Grant by 2027

South Africa to Launch Permanent R350 Basic Income Grant by 2027 — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The Department of Social Development aims to finalise a policy for a Basic Income Support grant by March 2027. This new scheme will replace the extended COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress payment, which began at R350 and was later raised to R370. Originally planned for six months, the SRD grant has supported over 8 million South Africans. Officials say the funds helped families buy food, electricity and clothing, while also boosting local economies. Independent research found the SRD grant reduced hunger, poverty and inequality and enabled beneficiaries to search for work and engage in economic activity. Backed by President Ramaphosa, the Basic Income Support policy is now being processed for implementation.

What impact do you think a permanent R350 grant might have on communities still recovering from pandemic pressures?

That grant could give families steadier support, stimulate small businesses, and ease financial stress as communities rebuild.

Locking in only R350 seems modest, especially after raising it temporarily to R370; that's barely above subsistence level.

Permanent basic income may sound generous, but funding gaps and bureaucratic delays could stall implementation before 2027.

It could help families plan budgets better; local organisations should start advising recipients on managing that steady R350 support.
